Time’s latest cover story is about extreme parenting, and Time’s accompanying cover is, well, extreme.
The cover photo shows 26-year-old Jamie Lynne Grumet breast-feeding her son Aram; Aram turns 4 next month. It is a startling image, to say the least.
Time was the surprise Magazine of the Year winner at last week’s National Magazine Awards, and this cover reminds us of the Cover of the Year winner. New York went home with the prize for its similarly startling cover depicting a naked and pregnant older woman, a deliberate parody of Demi Moore‘s iconic (though now overplayed) Vanity Fair cover. The cover story was also about extreme parenting — albeit of a different nature.
While the New York photo featured a model wearing a prosthetic pregnancy belly that was retouched to appear real in post-production, the Time photo is 100% real, upping the shock factor. We can’t help but wonder just how mortified little Aram will be when he’s old enough to realize he was photographed for a national magazine sucking on his mom’s boob at an age many deem inappropriate. Or maybe he won’t care. Either way, he should probably have a chat with the Nevermind baby.
