After a brief conversation with Phil in which he indicated that he had not heard any of the internet response, he emailed Bob. Email follows:

Bob - Such obvious, wishful and ignorant mischaracterizations of what I write are common. I don't call black men the N-word; I don't regard young women as bitches and whores; I don't glorify the use of assault weapons and drugs. Jay-Z, on the other hand.....Is he the only NBA owner allowed to call black men N---ers?"

Jay-Z profits from the worst and most sustaining self-enslaving stereotypes of black-American culture and I'M the racist? Some truths, I guess, are just hard to read, let alone think about.

(Same column I provide support for Amar'e Stoudemire at a time when everyone in town is ripping him to shreds. That was my LEAD, too, but what does that matter?)

Well, there you go. We've been told that NY Post editors did not have any issue with the topic and that there will be no further comment it from Phil.

My thoughts on it? Well I'm CERTAINLY not going to sit here and act SURPRISED that he feels that way. Lets start there. Now had his criticism OF HIM AS A MINORITY OWNER been that of the team's play solely, I don't think he would have gotten much flack. This was personal. Again, I'm not gonna act like the points he made are shocking. I heard someone say today had he given the 'tone' that he was saying them in jest, all would have been well.

Joking or not, you can't say what he said and it 'be okay'. That's not even to say he is 'wrong'. That's not the point.The point is that the words he used were so polarizing that ANY POINT THAT HE HAD would be nullified by the word choice. Had he chosen better words, he actually may not have been judged so harshly. Alas, the words he chose come off as a 'canned response' to anything related to hip hop. As if, A. He still raps about THAT SHIT. B. That is ALL THAT RAPPERS RAP ABOUT.. 

 

Now I will not logic leap and say Mr. Mushnick doesn't listen to ANY HIP HOP. Shit, he might. He MAY WANT TO LISTEN TO MORE AND PARTICULARLY more of the person he is dissing. I mean he stated in that candid email that 'The President is Black....'  He DOES KNOW THE PRESIDENT QUOTED JAY-Z ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION during his campaign right? That Jay-Z was part of the push among the hip hop community (along with others) to HELP Barack get elected....a push BARACK EMBRACED? Same rapper that was 'Skiing on the boat'..."Wearing platinum when all ya'll chicks thought it was silver and shit' and talking more gun and coke talk than a little before. That same guy. So NOBODY ASSOCIATED WITH HIP HOP CAN 'CHANGE' Mr. Mushnick? Word? Got it...FOH... 

 

Crazy thing is, I could ACTUALLY MAKE Phil's argument for him without using those words IF IT ACTUALLY HAD SHIT TO DO WITH THE TOPIC AT HAND. Which it does not.. -_- (For those of you who don't know... JAY-Z IS MY FAVORITE RAPPER at press time...has been for awhile) That still wouldn't mean that it is relevant though because all though Jay JUST MIGHT HAVE MADE HIS MILLIONS 'telling the stories of urban plight', the LOGO AND THE COLORS of the Nets uniforms don't have SHIT TO DO WITH THAT. Last I checked, the CHICAGO WHITE SOX used those same colors in the same way. I don't see folks screaming that there are 'hip hop undertones' in their unis. Hold up...wait..wait.... wait... WAIT....It just hit me again...

The Brooklyn that Biggie described has CHANGED. @ the part that I go to now when I am in that neck of the woods. Yes there are still rough patches in and around the area. For sure.  There are ALSO women walking little dogs, folks of all colors walking around. The folks in Northern Brooklyn seemed to have noticed it... * So I know I am not imagining things. It is real.

In other words, it is a FAR FROM just a place for 'black people', IN PARTICULAR where that stadium is being built. (I've seen it.) So this subliminal message that Mushnick says Jay is sending with the uniforms and the relocation is lost on me. I promise I am not feigning ignorance on this one. It would probably make more sense to me if he were moving SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOOD. I could probably see his point. He isn't though and that is why I am lost. 

He sounds like someone who is mad at 'hip hop' period and he DEFINITELY reached on this one. In my opinion. I guess the other thing is that he is the MINORITY OWNER. That means others had to weigh in on this decision no? You know...like the guy with the BIG MONEY.. I gotta holla his name too?- DMX You know who I am talking about.

What are YOUR THOUGHTS on what he said?

How did I take it? I took it as a diss AT FIRST but I respect the fact that Mos has the right to speak on the other side of it. What I would LIKE to see is Mos get back to a platform where it doesn't have to be a 'response' to record. (He does MAKE RECORDS ADDRESSING THIS obviously but his platform isn't as big as Jay's. Acting career or not. He isn't getting played on 'non rap playing' radio stations, WSTW comes to mind. They play NIGGAS IN PARIS on their station..) Mr. Keaton kinda touches on that at the end of the video. @ if folks agree with Mos like they say, then give him the platform then...BY SUPPORTING HIM financially when his records come out. That is where my own issue lies with the record. It isn't that I believe he is dissing Jay (and 'Ye) but more about the fact that he KNOWS how folks are. They are gonna take it as a diss. He probably could have cleared it up a bit IHMO as to what his 'real' motive is. (Which is to speak on the other side of things). Or maybe he doesn't care to do so. (Which is my personal opinion. I could be wrong. I can accept that..) Either way, it is nice to see someone articulate that for him as a possible alternative as to how one should 'take the record'. *

They both said the same thing really. @ their actual responses. As far as the disses are concerned, I am not here to change your mind about which one you should like. If you like Jay's, cool. If you like Wayne's more, SUPER COOL. I think we all know where I stand on it though.

I usually hesitate to give my ALL OUT OPINIONS on here when I am simply posting up a track but I felt that is was necessary here. I get ALL TYPES OF QUESTIONS ABOUT MY THOUGHTS ON J.Cole. Most times I don't say much. I am STILL NOT HERE TO CHANGE FOLKS MINDS ABOUT HIM EITHER. Either you like him or you don't. I can't change that.

At this point everyone has put the song up so that is not what this post is all about....I'm sure YOU HAVE HEARD IT. Positive even. I have listened to it about 10 times or so in the last two hours.  I don't know what folks want from the kid. Now I am not saying this song just the BEST SONG IN THE WORLD or anything. It is not. It isn't 'trash' though either though.

Now I think I have already spoken about the fact that I don't like when he does the rapping, the hook and the beats due to his monotone nature. That 'nature' isn't conducive to the 'Pop Star/Rap Star' numbers folks are expecting from him due to his association to with Jay-Z. That said, he did a good job here. Beat started off 'interesting' but quickly found its way, his flow was NICE and the hook, while done in that signature style, worked pretty well. I DO wish he would have found someone else to do it but maybe he didn't trust anyone else to deliver it the way he wanted. He got his point across though. Jay gave him a nice verse. If you thought Jay was going to go ALL OUT on his protege's album, you are a fool. Why WOULD HE? That would be suicidal for his artist. (Yeah..yeah...yeah...Jay has fallen off...yada...yada...-_-) He came in and gave him a good run. I'm not mad at it.


It is funny to hear folks say 'The days of a bunch of hit records on the actual album' are over yet they expect.........just that. I don't know if I ever 'expected' this kid to just have a 'slew of number one hits'. I was just happy that a 'regular kid' with skills actually got a chance to showcase them. I think people either have missed the point of why they were initially happy when this kid got noticed or folks have articulated why it is they 'want him to win'. In the World of rap, where you either have to be the SUPER NERD or the SUPER TOUGH NIGGA, he falls in the middle. I will take blame for that lack of articulation as well as I haven't done a very good job 'explaining' why it is I do root for him. Some think with me it is because he is from NC. No. There are PLENTY OF MCS in NC who I don't 'root for'. J.Cole isn't even the BEST MC in NC. Hell, if I start to REALLY give it some thought, he might be top Five. Real spit. At the same time though, he is one of the BEST YOUNG MCS in that region and after Peter Pablo, no one has ever really had a true machine behind them to make a REAL IMPACT on the radio. Not on hip hop...(See what I did there?) The radio. He has that chance. I just don't know if he is THE ONE TO DO IT. That just isn't his 'style'. It just isn't. Hope I am wrong. I thought his label squandered it chance when that Miquel joint SKYROCKETED OFF. That was a hit. That is another thing that is working against him. Folks who aren't 'music nerds' first REAL TASTE OF HIM was that 'All I Want Is You" joint and it seems like he isn't making 'another song like that ON PURPOSE. Which is a mistake. He BETTER have another joint like that on his album (I haven't heard it...) or folks will 'be disappointed'.


So here we are. With this leaked song that I feel like was leaked as a 'Shut the f@ck up' to the folks who were saying 'That song doesn't exist...'. Is it enough? Only time will time. Again, because the stakes are so HIGH, folks are already nitpicking it apart to me. As we speak......

I stand somewhere in the middle of all of that. I mean as someone who actually likes those two (I would be willing to guess that is the root of most of this. The "Do you like 'em or not" context of things....) I am 'positive' about the news. I didn't make an initial post here on the blog but when she put it out there in the pre-interview, I put the pic on FB. . HOWEVER, I really haven't said too much more about it unless asked. Why?

It is not my child nor a child that I will have any factor in rearing. I also know a little bit about child rearing BEYOND the fact that I was one myself so I am not about to pop junk about it. I know how hard it truly is. I know some of you are coming from that 'hurt' place in your life so you are projecting all types of stuff in your comments. I have no ax to grind in that matter. I am not 'mad' at her for being with him. I don't 'hate him for some rap he said or his 'position' in hip hop. I don't 'get mad that people say he OR she is the best doing it in their respective places in the genres of music they do. Not because I agree with that sentiment (One is my favorite and the other I like...but not that high on the list) but because I don't carry those types of feelings over to their personal lives. I'm not about to be out here hoping 'their kid doesn't look like such and such' on some sneak diss type time. Not out here 'hoping that she doesn't end up looking like her mother when she is older' 'cause quite frankly WE ALL GET OLD. Some of us better than others but it happens. Besides, with as reckless as some of you talk about Life in general, I am not expecting you to be here much longer to have to worry about it. It is just not my place to be that invested in what is going on with them and their child. I don't 'hang my hopes of black marriage' on them. I don't need them as role models nor would I want to do that to them. I would rather 'let them cook'.

I am far less invested in 'What kinda parents they are gonna be...' or 'What the child's name is gonna be..." or my all time favorite..."What is the child going to look like?". These are all things we will find out. I'm in no hurry. I have my own to take care of. Which leads me to the speculation...oops I mean slander...'Cause that is what 99% of ya'lls 'slander' really is. Speculation.


Speculation for me isn't as much of a sport as it seems to be for some of you. I like laughs and jokes too but for two people that a lot of you claim not to give a 'fuck about', 75% of your TL has been about 'em if it isn't about the other two characters you claim not to care about. (Wayne and Drake). I would excuse the youngin's from partaking in such bullshit EXCEPT for the fact that they are waxing philosophical about being grown so .....yeah...

Folks out here worrying about a child that even if it were to turn out 'harmed', that they wouldn't be able to help. Speculating on shit 'just cause they can'. Being hurtful 'for the hell of it'. Same folks that keep wondering why things 'never happen for them'. I don't. It is clear as day why shit doesn't happen for you. Your energy is focused on the wrong thing.

Take this ridiculous notion that some of you are running with that says the pregnancy rates will skyrocket due to this news. Bull. Shit. Matter of fact, let me riddle you this.

Who else got pregnant that caused the other four children that all of these 'ratchet girls' who are gonna follow Beyonce's lead? I'll wait....

I mean folks have been getting pregnant out here a long time and the HISTORY behind it has NOTHING TO DO WITH BEY. She didn't cause your cousin Tremaine to fool with Leroy and have 3 kids by him did she? Oh. She isn't the reason your Pops left your Moms or that you have stepbrothers and stepsisters. Living life in a vacuum for the sake of a joke must be a good time for some of you. Again, I don't wanna hear it is a joke because you 'ran said joke' about twenty times already. "I blame...." You seem REALLY SERIOUS with that. You already have someone in mind when you say stuff like that from what I have seen when I talk to you about it (or see you speak on it) later on down the line.


Another one I would like to dispel is the notion that she 'did it the right way'...(Oh you thought I was only gonna go at one side of this thing didn't you? That's your problem. Not mine. I am not you homie.)


I do understand 'what the right way' is too. That's not what I am arguing. What I am arguing is the notion that 'once you do XYZ then you can no longer be XYZ'. That is my issue. See, I know how this all plays out. You start running with the notion that one can 'never recover' from a mistake and the next thing you know, you guessed.....SOME ONE IS NO LONGER GOING TO GIVE A DAMM. Their actions will never be 'to get right' because they have already messed up in Life. You see that type of attitude every day.* 

So while I get promoting 'the right way' and ideally one would like it to go that way, you HAVE TO LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD. You know where happiness can be achieved more than one way? Where fairy tales don't come true but you turn out more than okay anyway? 

Maybe folks don't want to married out here.** They have their child and they have realized that maybe it needs to be the way it is. I know there are a lot of folks out here who 'bash' the other parent but I know some who have ACTUALLY LET IT GO and just go along their parenting way finding happiness later on in life via someone else once things got settled.  I know some who knew FROM JUMP that they were alone and handled their business and did the same.  Finally, I know some that STILL AREN'T MARRIED but have ADULT CHILDREN and their situation works for them. So while there is an ideal......

Maybe folks don't get 'it right' the first time around and have a kid or three. No need to hand out Scarlet Letters via Beyonce's pregnancy though. Which is what kinda slander is being sent with this message. Lets not act like Bey is the first 'honest' woman out here. She is not. There are plenty of folks out there doing their thing with the child situation either the way she is doing it or in other ways. I don't know Bey personally so I can't speak to how she feels about it but I am doubting she is doing anything else than living her life the best she can. @ any 'messages' she is sending.


It is also pretty funny to hear folks who don't even LIKE relationships speak on Jay/Bey's in absolutes...Cats speaking on folks 'winning' in Life and such but still finding that 'little hole' to poke to keep 'em down a notch. Good job buddy. Hats off to you for the backhanded compliments. Kudos to all of you out there laughing too for without you, this wouldn't be 'entertaining.'. Oh that's right, you are just 'telling' the truth. My bad plair. Keep projecting....I mean telling the your..I mean the truth about THEIR situation. Opinion? You are blurring the line on that one champ. Sorry. See the 'speculation' paragraph above. Now if that is what you get 'paid' to do, COOL. That doesn't mean I have to 'accept' it as the gospel though. So I am not telling you (or your favorite blogger/radio show/whatever person) not to write it. Just know that I am pretty dismissive of some of those notions. Just know if you do this on the regular, just like you see patterns in folks, someone might see one in you. Just saying....

*Reminds me of a particularly ignorant tweet I saw when the Earthquake rumbled our coast the other week in regards to that person 'not doing right because it is all gonna end anyway.' I'd bet money that same person has complained more than once about nobody 'giving a fuck about the plight of the folks where they live' yet they want someone to care while they harvest the attitude that they have. Yeah aight...Folks should care more about you than you do about yourself? What planet do you live on chief? You clearly don't care about yourself or others so why should anyone else? Exactly.
