Akwa Ibom kick boxer macheted to death while training

His name is Alexander Joseph, popularly known as 'Ibom' and he was macheted and shot dead while he was training at the Uyo Township stadium in Akwa Ibom yesterday morning May 12th 2012.

Eyewitnesses said the popular kick boxer was attacked by five men around 9.30 AM in the morning as he got ready to start training. They used the matchete on him, then shot him point blank in the face.

Ibom was Akwa Ibom's medal hopeful for the 2012 National Sports Festival which will hold in Lagos later this year. The police are investigating his death. Sad! May he rest in peace.

Sad and Untold Story Of Rashidi Yekini’s Last Days – Premium Times

Rashidi Yekini
Accounts from neighbours and associates paint a picture of a man who struggled with serious mental and delusional disorder after losing life savings to a bungled investment.
One neighbour spoke of his losing life savings to a sham investment, and another recalled seeing him frequently around women selling Bóle (roasted plantain); and on two occasions he answered nature’s call by a roadside in Ibadan where he lived away his final days.
Then, a former teammate conjectured how a disheartening jeering from fans during a crucial match that turned out his last international showing, haunted him to a bitter end.
Those who met Rashidi Yekini within the last one year say at least one of those episodes played a role in his unexpected death last week.

“I guess he died of depression,” one neighbour said.
But after agonizing years in his own world, only in death would the former striker, who almost singlehandedly served Nigeria vital football wins, evoke such complex tales that offer a glimpse into a personal struggle with insecurity and despair, again pointing out the question of whether the authorities or even friends could have been helpful in saving the former superstar.
A day after his funeral in his Irra town in Offa, Kwara state, the talk in this local community remained the sad exit of one of their prominent sons whose achievements as Nigeria’s most prolific scorer has not been equalled yet.
“We tried all that we can do in our own capacity but the cruel hands of death still took him away from us. We only hope and pray for eternal rest for his soul,” said Mohamodu Mudasiru Adetunji ( the Esa of Irra), who was also Mr. Yekini’s uncle.
For much of his playing days, dating back to an active international career in which he netted 37 goals in 58 matches, Yekini worked hard to stay off the prying eyes of the media.
The line, “his games spoke for him”, came true.
But that seemingly evasiveness would eventually help conceal a fatal and terminal trouble that afflicted Yekini for more than five years, those who were close to him said.
“We all loved him but for reasons I can’t explain he did not want to socialize with people a reason I feel had effects on him on the long run,” said Dimeji Lawal, a former youth international who lives in Ibadan, and knew Yekini for many years.
“We would have loved to help Yekini in our little way but until his last days, he wasn’t really accessible.” Mr. Lawal described Yekini as a philanthropist who did all in his power to help the course of others.
After retiring from international and club football, Yekini led a low profile life in Ibadan, living in a four bedroom apartment on Ring road, reports say, away from his family who stayed in his hometown in Kwara state.
Accounts from neighbours and associates paint a picture of a man who struggled with serious mental and delusional disorder after losing life savings to a bungled investment.
One neigbour, who claimed to have known the ex-international well over a decade, traced the problems to a deal between Yekini and a confidant known only as Ibraheem.
“He has always been a quiet person who does not want attention on him,” the neighbour, who refused to be named, said.
“But for me, Yekini started losing his mind and began behaving erratically due to his loss of huge sum of money to the death of his only confidant and business partner, Ibraheem, who ran a bureau de change in Sabo Area of Ibadan.”
According to the neighbour, Mr. Yekini liquidated all his savings and turned them to cash which he transferred to Ibraheem for his foreign exchange and jewelry trade.
Ibraheem was gunned down by armed robbers after receiving a tip-off that he was to transact a huge amount that day and the robbers made away with the bulk of the capital which belonged to Yekini.
Barely without any savings left, that incident will prove a turning point in the former soccer star’s life, and will lead him through a bitter struggle that ended in death last week, the neighbour said. For Yekini, the experience added boost to his decision to lead an isolated life.
“He preferred to be on his own, believing Ibraheem’s death was the handiwork of wicked rivals,” the neighbour said.
Before his death, all his automobiles were in a state of disrepair and many times he was seen trekking in shorts in different parts of the city.
Many of such outings, another former neighbour, Mukaila Babalola said, led Yekini to stalls where women sold roasted plantains(bole) on Onireke road near Multichoice office in Ibadan.
“Always in short but not sport trousers,” said Babalola, who claimed to have seen Yekini regularly the past two to three years. “I remember reversing my car upon sighting him soliloquizing along Golf club area last year. I greeted him but he answered reluctantly.”
But that was not all. Twice, Babalola who described the locations he often sighted Yekini as “pathetic”, saw the former Super Eagles striker emerging from road side bush, with left over paper squeezed in his palm, after easing his bowels around Sabo and Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan.
A pathetic story it appears for this legendary striker. But other tales by colleagues and those Yekini thrilled with his superlative skills underlined a glorious reign of a man that proved one of the best in football, winning accolades home and away.
On his website, former teammate and defensive midfielder, Sunday Oliseh, called Yekini “one of the best African players and legends to ever walk this earth.”
But Oliseh reckoned that somehow a world cup match in which Yekini featured and was booed by fans as he was nearing retirement played a devastating role in the former striker’s end.
“Yekini felt betrayed and this haunted him till his death,” Oliseh wrote. “How could one give so much and receive so little in return from your own kind?” he asked.
More than that possibly haunted Yekini. Oliseh recalls the Super Eagles’ African nations’ cup triumph of 1994 in which Yekini played a key role, and winning the vital matches for Nigeria.
“Almost 20 years after this major conquest, Yekini is yet to receive the house the Nigerian government promised him,” Oliseh said.
“In other words, he died not being rewarded for his efforts to make Nigeria great.”

(Words/Guest Blogger) Words by @jg24lyfe X Mr. Wiley Can't Be Happy

BLOGGER NOTE: I am mad I didn't write this. I promise I am. Hats of to Graham for this.. For real.

It's around 2:30 am and I'm making that dreaded trip to the toilet. No matter how well positioned, your slippers are never truly visible in the dark. Under normal circumstances no big deal but this morning the dream was too good and too real. Ralph Wiley was talking to me...

Now, I've had celebrities in my dreams but breast and ass always set the stage but not tonight. Ralph Wiley was talking to me...

Mr. Wiley was angry. And needs you to keep his name out your mouth.

For those of you who don't know Mr. Wiley was a wordsmith with the ability to charm and blast you without as much as a deep breath. Socially aware and outspoken in both written and broadcast journalism. Not one to compromise or retreat because if he said it, he meant it. A superior knowledge of NFL, NBA, boxing and MLB made the most basic sports fan stand at attention or in my case sit in awe. He inspired me with his command. He was "telling the truth". A Black truth.

"Graham, wake up. I need to talk and you're going to listen."

Face was familiar but didn't catch the voice. What the fuck, didn't matter because I wasn't resting well.

"Did these negros not expect me to come back? Was I expected to rest in peace as they continue to sight me as a part of the inspiration in their approach to sports journalism?"

"Oh shit! Its Ralph Wiley! Haha, my man...wait, shouldn't this conversation take place with one of the ESPN types who profess their undying love for you?"

"Tried that. You think I'd come to you first? Not likely but I knew you'd listen, besides...you weren't sleeping well and about to make that can run."

"True." He had me there and the overriding thought was hurry up cause I'm not going to make it through one of those SportReporters type slow drags.

"Besides, I could take this to Online Black something or other."

"Would you really do that Mr. Wiley? Really?"

"No, he's part of the problem. I think he still prays to me. Nice guy though but I digress. You listening or what?"

     "Yes sir."

"I'm going to keep this short and to the point. You don't have to tell it but I have to get this of my chest. You know I died of a heart attack right? Anyway, I can't believe that the people who swear their inspiration is me can have their voices muted by a mouse. Really, Mickey has the power to quiet the voices that say I'm their guide, the one that moves them to be better? To be great?"

I'm sitting up now. Why? Because it's the truth.

"This is a dream so lay your ass down. Do you know how much it pains me to see all these wonderfully talented writers and minds controlled by an entity that wears white gloves, clogs, & no shirt?"

"Mr. Wiley, they point to their paychecks. The money is the driving factor. They speak their minds only when they think no ones watching. Hard to reach and question because of their position."

"Bryant H. McGill once said, and I quote, "The world is not fair, and often fools, cowards, liars and the selfish hide in high places."

Wow. Could it be that my thoughts all along were true? I'm really feeling this thought process. I'm smiling like shit. This dream should have come with a pause button. Dream or no dream I got to piss.

"Graham here is my heart...I want...no, no, no, I need someone, anyone, to step up and be the voice I lost too soon. Can you do this? I'm not sure but I trust you to try. This won't make you popular amongst those who desire to be me or like me but our black athletes need an uncompromising voice who values the personal story above the check. Someone who will communicate what's right and not what they're told."

     "Yes sir."

"You don't need to sir me. We're talking, well I'm talking. You continue to give me this time and I'll take care of you."

     "....."

"At some point I'm hoping these young brothers and sisters have a true Ralph Wiley moment and voice what they think when it's not hidden on twitter DM's and Facebook messages." "We can't keep hiding."

Mr.Wiley voice is getting louder but becoming stained. His eye's are red but it's anger and sorrow. Frustration of a man who can't reach the masses and has little to no faith that the black sports journalist can no longer shake the power of the mouse.

"Graham, understand my man, all of them aren't bad. Those who have other income generally speak from the heart with little regard of backlash or having to play Minnie."

"Mr. Wiley, can you see this ever changing? Is it truly possible that we can see a more candid, unabashed, thought sharing black sports journalist in the face of Disney control?"

"If none emerge it will further kill the public image of our black athlete. Most times we're all we have. We've already done damage that will never be repaired."

     "I understand...totally."

"Get up and go to the bathroom. I'll be here when you get back so we can discuss the coonish behavior of the negros sitting across from Skip Bayless."

Sitting up I throw my feet over the bed and damn, slippers right there. I heard his voice inside my head saying, "I told you I'd hook you up. I'm in heaven and I think Jesus likes my work!"

In his last piece, Mr. Wiley began with these words: "All a man's got is the integrity of his work." I believe that. If only they believed that in the face of Mickey. If not, continue to "protect that check and your money" & I'll continue to say fuck you and we're both satisfied.

Peace, Grahamzlaw

Here's what they think about you- NWA Phil Mushnick's 'comments' on Jay-Z's handling of the Nets logos and uniforms....

Well now... I see this ruffled some feathers.... Not that I am surprised that this is INDEED what they think 'about us'.... Never that. Keep reading..

Nets on Jay-Z track
As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new “urban” home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment?
Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N------s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B----hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!
“I guess I won’t need my color TV anymore now that the Nets will be wearing black and white,’’ writes reader John Lynch.
And reader David Distefano now wonders what’s left for the Nets to choose as “their alternate third-uniform to sell during nationally televised games.”

Upon hearing about the outrage to the ORIGINAL comments.....this was his RESPONSE...

We wrote early this morning, "You know what Louis CK says about the 'N-Word?'" in response to today's Phil Mushnick column in the NY Post. Phil wrote:

As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new “urban” home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment?

Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N------s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B----hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!

You responded, heatedly.

Joe Lucia, Awful Announcing: "Phil Mushnick had an awful comment in his column today."

Anthony Ramsey, Los that Sports: "NY Post writer publishes racist article about Jay-Z and Brooklyn Nets."

Unsigned, Huffington Post: "Phil Mushnick, NY Post Writer, Says Brooklyn Nets Should Be Called 'New York N-----s' Because Of Jay-Z Involvement"

Joe Coscarelli, NY Mag: "New York Post Columnist Goes Full-Racist on Jay-Z’s Brooklyn Nets"

Sarah Devlin, SportsGrid: New York Post Columnist Suggests Brooklyn Nets Rename Themselves “New York N______s”

Rick Chandler, Off the Bench: "NY Post columnist goes off the rails on Jay-Z: ‘Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N——s?’"

1010 WINS' Marc Ernay tweeted: "the guy's referring to jay-z's lyrics, not being racist #whydontpeoplereadanymore"

Deadspin's Drew Magary tweeted: "I agree with Phil Mushnick's hating ESPN policy, but not his BLACK UNIS ARE FOR THUGGY THUGS policy."

After a brief conversation with Phil in which he indicated that he had not heard any of the internet response, he emailed Bob. Email follows:

Bob - Such obvious, wishful and ignorant mischaracterizations of what I write are common. I don't call black men the N-word; I don't regard young women as bitches and whores; I don't glorify the use of assault weapons and drugs. Jay-Z, on the other hand.....Is he the only NBA owner allowed to call black men N---ers?"

Jay-Z profits from the worst and most sustaining self-enslaving stereotypes of black-American culture and I'M the racist? Some truths, I guess, are just hard to read, let alone think about.

(Same column I provide support for Amar'e Stoudemire at a time when everyone in town is ripping him to shreds. That was my LEAD, too, but what does that matter?)
Well, there you go. We've been told that NY Post editors did not have any issue with the topic and that there will be no further comment it from Phil.

My thoughts on it? Well I'm CERTAINLY not going to sit here and act SURPRISED that he feels that way. Lets start there. Now had his criticism OF HIM AS A MINORITY OWNER been that of the team's play solely, I don't think he would have gotten much flack. This was personal. Again, I'm not gonna act like the points he made are shocking. I heard someone say today had he given the 'tone' that he was saying them in jest, all would have been well.

BOOOLLLLSHIIITTTT.. (Bullshit)

Joking or not, you can't say what he said and it 'be okay'. That's not even to say he is 'wrong'. That's not the point. The point is that the words he used were so polarizing that ANY POINT THAT HE HAD would be nullified by the word choice. Had he chosen better words, he actually may not have been judged so harshly. Alas, the words he chose come off as a 'canned response' to anything related to hip hop. As if, A. He still raps about THAT SHIT. B. That is ALL THAT RAPPERS RAP ABOUT..

Now I will not logic leap and say Mr. Mushnick doesn't listen to ANY HIP HOP. Shit, he might. He MAY WANT TO LISTEN TO MORE AND PARTICULARLY more of the person he is dissing. I mean he stated in that candid email that 'The President is Black....'  He DOES KNOW THE PRESIDENT QUOTED JAY-Z ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION during his campaign right? That Jay-Z was part of the push among the hip hop community (along with others) to HELP Barack get elected....a push BARACK EMBRACED? Same rapper that was 'Skiing on the boat'..."Wearing platinum when all ya'll chicks thought it was silver and shit' and talking more gun and coke talk than a little before. That same guy. So NOBODY ASSOCIATED WITH HIP HOP CAN 'CHANGE' Mr. Mushnick? Word? Got it...FOH...

Crazy thing is, I could ACTUALLY MAKE Phil's argument for him without using those words IF IT ACTUALLY HAD SHIT TO DO WITH THE TOPIC AT HAND. Which it does not.. -_- (For those of you who don't know... JAY-Z IS MY FAVORITE RAPPER at press time...has been for awhile) That still wouldn't mean that it is relevant though because all though Jay JUST MIGHT HAVE MADE HIS MILLIONS 'telling the stories of urban plight', the LOGO AND THE COLORS of the Nets uniforms don't have SHIT TO DO WITH THAT. Last I checked, the CHICAGO WHITE SOX used those same colors in the same way. I don't see folks screaming that there are 'hip hop undertones' in their unis. Hold up...wait..wait.... wait... WAIT....It just hit me again...

I guess MJ was 'channeling the black race n this song too'.....

People don't think before they type sometimes do they? I don't LIVE IN NEW YORK but I have VISITED folks I know who LIVE THERE and I can tell you this with certainty...

The Brooklyn that Biggie described has CHANGED. @ the part that I go to now when I am in that neck of the woods. Yes there are still rough patches in and around the area. For sure.  There are ALSO women walking little dogs, folks of all colors walking around. The folks in Northern Brooklyn seemed to have noticed it... * So I know I am not imagining things. It is real.

In other words, it is a FAR FROM just a place for 'black people', IN PARTICULAR where that stadium is being built. (I've seen it.) So this subliminal message that Mushnick says Jay is sending with the uniforms and the relocation is lost on me. I promise I am not feigning ignorance on this one. It would probably make more sense to me if he were moving SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOOD. I could probably see his point. He isn't though and that is why I am lost.

He sounds like someone who is mad at 'hip hop' period and he DEFINITELY reached on this one. In my opinion. I guess the other thing is that he is the MINORITY OWNER. That means others had to weigh in on this decision no? You know...like the guy with the BIG MONEY.. I gotta holla his name too?- DMX You know who I am talking about.

Serena tells Celebuzz
I have given up on dating. It just hasn't worked out well for me. I'm a really emotional person. I give my all and everything. I do make mistakes, like every human does, but the last relationship was just too much of a heart break for me. I just can't go through that anymore. It was hard. I just have to remove myself from that atmosphere for about the next decade or so.
Dear women, don't let a broken relationship leave you bitter. Life is too short, love is too beautiful!

Zambia beat Ivory Coast to lift 2012 Orange African Cup of Nation

Zambia conjured up a shock when they toppled star-studded Ivory Coast 8-7 in a penalty shoot-out to claim their first ever Africa Cup of Nations title on Sunday.
With the sides goalless after extra time Zambia's Stoppila Sunzu converted the magic spot kick after Arsenal striker Gervinho missed for the Elephants.
The result meant misery for hot favourites Ivory Coast, who failed to claim the title despite not conceding a goal throughout the entire competition until Sunday's shootout.
It also revived memories for Didier Drogba, who missed a penalty in the second half of normal time, and company of their 2006 penalty shoot out final defeat to Egypt in Cairo.
Zambia, motivated by the memory of the 1993 national team wiped out in a plane crash off the Libreville coast, went into the 2012 climax as outsiders.
But they covered themselves with glory, hassling and harrowing their star-studded rivals all the way to the penalty shoot-out, and then holding their nerve to prevail in the dramatic, barely watchable denouement.
Ivory Coast coach Francois Zahoui fielded the same side that saw off Mali 1-0 in the semi-final.
His Zambian counterpart, Herve Renard, recalled striker Emmanuel Mayuka, after his starring role in getting the decisive goal in the 1-0 last four defeat over Ghana.
He joined captain Christopher Katongo in spearheading the Chipolopolo's (Copper Bullets) attack.
Russian-based midfielder Chisamba Lungu came in for Francis Kasonde.   A minute of silence was observed before kick-off in memory of the 74 people killed in the Port Said stadium slaughter in Egypt.
The game was only seconds old when Zambia almost took a shock lead, with keeper Boubacar Barry doing well to save Nathan Sinkala's close range shot off Katongo's quick pass from a Rainford Kalaba corner.
Renard was forced into an unscripted change when defender Joseph Musonda limped off in tears on 11 minutes - Nyambe Mulenga took his place.
A shaky start by Ivory Coast gave Zambia hope of an upset and Kalaba's 30m freekick wasn't far away after taking a deflection off Cheik Tiote's leg.
The Elephants put together their best passage of play approaching the half hour mark, a neat Drogba backheel setting up Yaya Toure only for the Manchester City midfielder's angled shot to go wide of the far post.
A hugely promising first half from Zambia had the Elephants' defence, marshalled by Kolo Toure, under more pressure than they would have wanted, with Katongo leading from the front.
The second half began with a deathly hush descending on the stadium - the final in desperate need of the kiss of life in the guise of a goal.
And on 72 minutes one should have come after Ivory Coast were awarded a penalty when Issac Chansa and Mulenga barged into Gervinho.
Drogba stepped up but his woeful attempt went soaring into the night sky, even though he appeared to divert blame to the pitch, glaring at the spot.
This was his second miss from the spot after he had a penalty saved in the quarter-final win over Equatorial Guinea, where he went on to score twice.
One minute later Max Gradel's shot from the box had Zambia keeper Kennedy Mweene beaten, but it rolled wide of the far post.
In the 95th minute, substitute Felix Katongo crossed from the right for his brother Christopher with only Barry's toe diverting the goalbound ball off the near post.
There was high drama once the penalty shoot out got underway, with Kolo Toure missing the Ivorians seventh penalty, but Zambia's Kalaba also missing his to leave the sides still inseparable.
Then after Gervinho failed in his attempt it was left to Sunzu, the defender who plays his club football in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to give Zambia a historic first title, and consign Ivory Coast to another wretched defeat.

First Nigerians to hoist its flag on the highest mountain in Eastern Europe of Ukraine

Press statement from their publicist...
History was made on the Saturday, 25th sept 2011 when two Nigerians, Chinedu Agunanne and Iroko Emamuzo, who are final year Pharmacy students of Ternopil State Medical University in Ternopil City of Ukraine, climbed to the highest peak of Hoverla mountain (Ukrainian: Говерла, Hoverla; Hungarian: Hóvár; Romanian: Hovârla; Goverla, Czech and Slovak: Hoverla, Polish: Howerla, Russian: Говерла ) which is 2,061 m, and the highest mountain in Ukraine and part of the Carpathian Mountains.

Being so happy of what they have achieved, Chinedu decided to leave a mark by tearing his shirt which had Nigerian 48th Independence inscribed on it to show tourist from the whole world that Nigerians were there. The Hoverla mountain is one of the most visited spot in the  Carpathian Mountains system by tourist around the world.
